10 MOST PLAYED CHESS OPENINGS IN 2023 (December Final Showdown). As the year is a bout to finish, Women’s Grandmaster Dina Belenkaya breaks down the most played openings of the last year. In this video, you may find all the most famous chessplayers like Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Ben Finegold, GothamChess, Andrea Botez, Baadur Jobava. But! Be careful! This is not a guide on how better to play! This are the games played by ALL players online and offline from 400 to 4000 rated, whose games were registered in the base. Statistics shows that sometimes they make mistakes.
If you want to know what are the BEST openings that were played during this year 2023, do let me know in the comments down below and I’ll make a separate video for you!
Curious of what you think of this new format 🙂

thanks for this content Dina, new subscriber here… cheers from Argentina 😀
i never would think, that my play will become better by watching youtubevideos, but you and this chanel are just amazing!
Learning openings with our angry mamma Dina… Thanks, mamma!
Greetings from Brazil! !
1. I have never, and never will play Bongcloud.
2. Grob Attack. I have never seen that before. Weird.
3. Nimzo-Larsen, named after GM Bent Larsen, the GM beaten 7-0 by Bobbie Fischer in one of the Candidate matches.
4. English Opening, have never used it, seems ok to me. "…more pawns to the center, the stronger you are." I am remembering that Russian players have always concentrated on the center.***
5. Reti Opening, proven to be good. London, looks solid. When you were thinking checkmate, that was above my pay grade…lol.
6. I used to play Queen's Gambit Accepted, until Levy of Gotham Chess, said that Queen's Gambit Declined is easier to play? As I recall, black eventually does a fianchetto with the QB?
7. Queen's Gambit Declined. I have been playing this, and have had fairly good results with it. The moves make sense to me.
8, E4, this is what I start my games with. Caro-Kann, I have problems against the Caro-Kann, I play against it untraditionally. I do not do d4, bring the King's Knight out, then take the QP when pushed, then check with the bishop, then depending on the move will put the knight out to e5. I have had mixed results doing that, I will have to look and see my winning percentage on chess doing that. Your analysis with the usual opening against the Caro-Kann is complicated for me as white.
9. I do not play the Sicilian Defense as Black. Against it I play the Closed Sicilian, Fianchetto Variation, and putting the Kings Knight on B3, as Smyslov used to do.
10. Italian Game, I used to play Ruy Lopez, Levy suggested I try the Giuoco Piano, I am getting good at this opening.
Dina, the defense I have always used against E4 is not the Sicilian, rather I have always used the same defense that GM Ian Nepo. uses, the Petroff/Petrov Defense. I seem to do very well with this Defense.
I am older, and always could use to improve my game.
What openings did YOU play the most this year?!?
