Chess Openings: Petrov Defense

The Petrov Defense is a chess opening that looks to mirror white’s first two opening moves in hope for a usually drawish game. Black has to be careful though as it is unsound for him to continue to mirror the moves after white captures black’s pawn. In this video we take a look at the three most common lines that you will see in the Petrov Defense.

  1. 1. e4 e5
    2. Nf3 Nf6
    3. Nxe5 Nxe4
    4. Qe2

I think white does not have to move away the knight from e4 square sir

  2. 0:58 NO it is not, I always fucking see Kb3 bullshit!! Everytime I play Kf6 I NEVER see them take the pawn EEEEEEVVVVVVVEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  3. This is just my opinion, Petrov Defense is a weak defense which starts on Nf6.

  4. 3:05, why should the pawn go to d4? Most players I play go to d3 threatening the knight.

  5. Is this a solid defense or just for low rated type of defense?

  6. Before pawn d6 it should be queen to e7 if white protects the knight then pawn should be pushed

  7. shoulda went to like move 10 in the classical attack

  8. your videos are very helpful and instructive, they are simple and not over complicated with theory, thanks!

  9. "Both sides can Kamikaze with their pawns"

  10. 2:00 how is f6/ bd6 as moves to attack the knight for black instead of the queen- if the prior mistakes are already made

  11. My favorite opening since I started playing chess

  12. I played the Cara-Kahn a lot, and then switched to the Scandinavian, but I want to try something different, so I'll give it a go, and see, but I've a feeling it'll lead to a lot of closed positions, which I'm not so familiar, as I normally play the Spanish or Italian for white, and throw in some gambits with those lines, but I'm trying to get a more wholistic understanding of chess, so I'll try the Russian for now.

  13. why in the first variation cant they just pin your knight

  14. Here after world championship 2021 game 4

  15. ive always liked to play bishop c4 against this as white instead of any lines you discussed, anyone know why thats a bad idea?

  16. A drawish game if we wish. The black or white gambits are super agressive an very tricky!

  17. If you're talking and teaching the opening from one side. You should have that side on the bottom you're teaching and opening upside down half the time

  18. Petrov's Defense: Steinitz Attack, Symmetrical Variation
    1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. d4 Nxe4 4. Bc4 d5 5. Bb3 exd4 6. O-O Bc5 7. c3 dxc3 8.
    Bxd5 Nd6 9. b4 Bxb4 10. Qa4+ Bd7 11. Re1+ Kf8 12. Qxb4 Nc6 13. Qxc3 Qf6 14. Qxf6
    gxf6 15. Bh6+ Kg8 16. Bxc6 Bxc6 17. Nd4 Bd7 18. Nc3 c5 19. Nd5 cxd4 20. Ne7# 1-0

  27. this doesn't even address the most common line where the queen skewers the knight

  28. When I play with white I take the pawn and then sacrifice my knight on f7.
